Headaches are the most common neurological ailment suffered in Columbia SC. Headache simply means pain in the head or neck region. That’s a fairly broad definition. So, headaches are further defined by type. There are several types:
Tension Headaches feel like pressure, or tension, around the head. This type comes primarily from muscles of the head and scalp pulling too tightly. Except for pain, there are usually no other symptoms to this type of headache.
Sinus headaches involve infection in the sinus passages of the head and neck. Inflamed sinuses hurt. There is generally pressure, discomfort, and drainage until the infection clears.
Cluster headaches are severe. A cluster is a series of very painful headaches on one side of the head. They happen more often in men than women. And, the fact that they happen in a series makes them very debilitating. Often, the eye waters on the side of the headache. The causes of this type of headache are poorly understood, unfortunately.
Migraine Headache, or simply Migraines, have the greatest variability in symptoms. Someone suffering from migraines might experience nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and sensitivity to sound. Less commonly, visual disturbances occur, including temporary loss of vision. Many of the unusual symptoms of Migraines are related to cranial nerves that originate in the brainstem.
The fact is, a large percentage of headaches originate from the neck. When the muscles, spinal nerves, spinal cord, and brainstem are triggered, the result can be painful indeed. Conventional methods work solely to manage symptoms, relax tight muscles, and reduce pain. Today, we understand that the neck can be affected by structural changes that disturb the muscles and neurological tissue. We call these changes the Structural Shift. When properly addressed, structural changes can be corrected, allowing us to work on the root cause of headaches.
